Health and predictions

How to read your bike's health and each component's wear, where the estimates come from, and how much you can rely on them.

The Home screen opens with a percentage and a letter: that's the bike's overall health. Below it, the four components in the worst shape. The Diagnosis tab opens the same picture in full, component by component.

This page explains what's behind those numbers — and, more importantly, what isn't.

Where the estimates come from#

Predictions have two different sources, and the app always uses the better one it has.

Your workshop's diagnosis. If you're linked to a CrankPal workshop and that workshop has recorded your bike's components, the numbers come from there: a model calibrated on jobs that were actually carried out. It's the better source, because it knows what was fitted and when.

The app's own estimate. With no workshop linked — or on a bike the workshop doesn't have on file yet — the app estimates by itself, starting from the answers you gave when you added the bike and from the mileage you build up. It updates with every ride recorded.

At the top of Diagnosis it always says which of the two you're looking at:

Where there is one, the average error appears alongside: a ± 300 km means that model's predictions, measured against real jobs, were out by three hundred kilometres on average. It's the most honest number on the screen, and it tells you how tight to hold the timing.

Reading a component#

Each row carries the state of wear and how much is left, expressed as a range rather than a single figure: "between 400 and 700 km" tells the truth better than "in 550 km". Where there's enough data you also get the conversion into days, worked out from how much you usually ride, and a reliability percentage.

Colours follow severity: informational, keep an eye on it, urgent. The orange alert on Home picks up the component closest to the end, and tapping it opens Diagnosis.

Next to each component there's Book, which takes you straight to booking with your workshop. It's the same flow described in Workshops and bookings.

Next service and trend#

Still on Home, two panels complete the picture.

Next service says in how many kilometres — or how many days — the next job is due. If nothing is coming up, it says so.

This week adds up the last seven days' kilometres and compares them with your average: the up or down arrow is the change against how you usually ride. Without enough recorded rides the comparison doesn't appear — a trend over two rides isn't a trend.

The Data tab widens the same story: total distance, elevation, hours in the saddle, number of rides, and a chart of the last twelve.

Wear notifications#

When a component moves into keep an eye on it or urgent, the app tells you with a notification, even without opening it. You turn them on in ProfileIntegrationsPredictive notifications.

These notifications are generated on the phone, from your own data: they arrive without a connection and don't need an account. They're a different thing from the notifications the workshop sends, which are covered in Account, notifications and privacy.

When the numbers aren't there#

Three normal cases, none of them a fault.

"No components tracked for this bike." The workshop hasn't recorded what's fitted yet. That's what happens on the first visit: at the next job it does, and from then on predictions appear.

"Data not up to date · saved two hours ago." You're offline and looking at the last copy downloaded. Everything is still readable; the notice disappears at the first successful refresh.

No predictions, just the components. There need to be at least a few recorded rides for there to be anything to predict. Connect Strava or record a couple of rides and the estimates appear.

Common problems#

Health has dropped and I haven't touched anything

Health drops with mileage, so all it takes is rides arriving from Strava, Garmin or Health. It can also drop suddenly if your workshop has updated the diagnosis after an inspection: in that case the number hasn't got worse, it's got more accurate.

The workshop tells me one thing and the app another

The workshop is right: it has the bike in front of it. If you're linked to a workshop, the app shows its numbers; if you still see a starting estimate, that bike isn't on its records yet. Ask them to add it on your next visit.

I changed the chain but the counter didn't reset

The counter resets when the replacement is recorded: by your workshop, if they did it. A change you made yourself is something the app can't see.
