Cyclist app
Account, notifications and privacy
Creating your CrankPal account, choosing how your workshop reaches you, managing notifications, exporting your data and deleting your account.
A CrankPal account is one account for the whole platform: the same one you use in the app works in your workshop's customer area, on the website, and at every other workshop in the network. There isn't one per workshop.
Creating an account or signing in#
In ProfileWorkshop account, the Sign in or sign up button opens a screen with two tabs.
To sign up you need a name, an email address and a password of at least eight characters. To sign in, email and password.
If a workshop has already registered you as a customer, your account already exists: use Sign in with the email address you gave them. If you've never set a password, ask them to send the invitation again.
Without an account the app still works for the "bike" side — see The CrankPal app — but bookings, quotes and notifications from the workshop need to know who you are.
Notifications from the workshop#
At first sign-in the app shows you a screen explaining what arrives on this channel, before iOS asks for permission: appointments confirmed or moved, the status of work on your bike, quotes to approve, home pickup and delivery.
There's a practical reason for it: iOS grants one prompt per app. If you refuse it cold, the only way to turn notifications back on is through the iPhone's settings. The screen is there so you decide knowing what you're deciding.
If you've already said no, turn them back on in iOS SettingsCrankPalNotifications.
Your preferred channel#
In ProfileUpdates from your workshop you choose how you want to be reached: App notifications or Email.
With app notifications, minor updates arrive on the phone and don't double up your inbox. Important messages — appointments and quotes — reach you by email anyway: those are the ones you have to answer, and they mustn't depend on a system permission.
With Email you get everything by email, even when app notifications are on.
A line can appear under the selector saying who made the choice — Set by your workshop or Set by CrankPal support. It isn't a lock: you can change it, and your choice wins. The line is there so you know why it was set that way.
On the workshop side, the same selector is described in Customers.
Wear notifications#
These are a different thing and are turned on separately, in ProfileIntegrationsPredictive notifications. The phone works them out from your mileage; the workshop doesn't send them. They arrive without an account and without a connection. See Health and predictions.
Cranky stickers#
Cranky is the mechanic you'll meet around the app, and he's also a sticker pack. In Messages he arrives by himself when you install the app: he's in the sticker drawer with nothing for you to do.
For WhatsApp it takes a deliberate action: in ProfileStickers there's an Add button for each pack, which opens WhatsApp and installs it there. If WhatsApp isn't on the phone, the app tells you rather than opening onto nothing.
Your data#
ProfilePrivacy and data holds three things.
Privacy policy opens the document on the website, in your language.
Export my data prepares a JSON copy of the data held on this iPhone and lets you share or save it wherever you like.
Delete account and data removes the account from our servers and the data from the phone. It cannot be undone.
What the workshop can see about you, and what it can't, is set out in full in Workshops and bookings. That's also where you revoke a single workshop's authorisation without touching your account.
Common problems#
I'm not getting notifications any more
Check in iOS SettingsCrankPalNotifications that permission is on: if you revoked it, or reinstalled the app, it has to be granted again. In the meantime everything keeps reaching you by email — your workshop sees this written on your record and knows to write to you there.
I've ended up with two accounts
That happens if you signed up with a different address from the one you gave the workshop. Ask the workshop which address you're registered under and sign in with that one: the account is identified by its email address.
I logged out — have I lost my bikes?
Logging out clears the data saved on that phone. Bikes and history shared with a workshop live on your account and come back at your next sign-in; a bike added without ever signing in only existed there, and has to be added again.
